BOZEMAN, MT —   Sam Houston State needed a huge fourth quarter to defeat Montana State 49-35.  With the Bearkats trailing 35-31 with 12:05 left in the fourth quarter, George Scott was able to get them the lead with a deep pass of 47 yards to Joshua Farmer for the touchdown and then complete a two point conversion to put the score at 42-35.  George Scott passed for 394 yards and four touchdowns for the Bearkats.  Ryan Velez passed for 277 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions for the Bobcats.  Joshua Riley added 130 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

SAN MARCOS, TX — Northern Arizona used a strong first quarter and a kickoff returned for 95 yards to defeat Texas State 44-30.  The Bobcats were down 21-10 after the first quarter and even though the Bobcats passed for 475 yards they just couldn’t catch up with the balanced offense of the Lumberjacks.  Donald Robinson passed for 221 yards and one touchdown for the Lumberjacks.  Marvin Whitehead added 168 yards rushing and one touchdown.  Steven Curtis passed for 350 yards and one interception for the Bobcats.  Northern Arizona advances to the Big Sky championship game and Texas State awaits to hear their named called on Selection Day.

SACRAMENTO, CA —   Cal Poly used a balanced attack to put up 622 yards of total offense and they stomped California State 69-10.  This game was never close and the Hornets didn’t get on the board till the third quarter when Milton Berry nailed a 45 yard field goal and they still trailed 41-3.  Robert Peterson passed for 252 yards and two touchdowns for the Mustangs.  Harold Alexander added 133 yards rushing and three touchdowns.  Raymond Hopkins passed for 137 yards for the Hornets.  Cal Poly advances to Big Sky championship game and California State sits and wonders why they were unable to win a game all year.

HUNTSVILLE, TX —   Sam Houston State utilized two quarterbacks to pass for 433 yards and overpower the Stephen F. Austin defense and pull out the 34-6 win.  Leo Lucas was the star for the Bearkats as he tossed 3 touchdown passes.  The Bearkat defense still needs some work as they gave up 323 yards but they did get two turnovers and limit the Lumberjacks to only two field goals.  Jason Atkinson passed for 170 yards and threw one interception for the Lumberjacks.  Jeremy Johnson added 148 yards rushing.

SAN MARCOS, TX —   Texas State used a balanced attack and they were able to out-gain Idaho State 309-229 yards and defeat them 23-6.  The Bobcat defense was spectacular as they limited the Bengals to two field goals and was able to get a safety as well.  Steven Curtis passed for 199 yards and two touchdowns for the Bobcats.  Tommy Rios added 107 yards rushing.  William Martinez passed for 160 yards for the Bengals.

BOZEMAN, MT —   Both teams total 283 yards of total offense but when it came to turnovers Northern Arizona forced Montana State to commit four of them and this turned out to be the deciding factor as the Lumberjacks defeated the Bobcats 38-13.  The Lumberjacks star running back didn’t disappoint as he rushed for 144 yards and one touchdown.  Ryan Velez passed for 168 yards and one touchdown but his four interceptions doomed the Bobcats.

CHENEY, WA —   Cal Poly used an aerial attack to overwhelm Eastern Washington and defeat them by a score of 37-12.  The Eagle defense has no answer for Mustang quarterback Robert Peterson as he passed for 370 yards and tossed four touchdowns.  The Mustang defense which wasn’t that great today as they gave up 328 yards but every time the Eagle offense got into the redzone they were able to force them to kick field goals and that proved to be the difference.  Harry Moran passed for 219 yards for the Eagles.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA —   This was the marquee matchup in the Big Sky this week as #24 Northern Arizona took on #16 Cal Poly.  The Lumberjacks used a strong first quarter scoring 21 points in leading the Lumberjacks to a 52-31 win.  The Mustangs were able to come within 10 points in second quarter but that would be the closest they would come to the Lumberjacks.  Donald Robinson passed for 238 yards and one touchdown for the Lumberjacks.  Marvin Whitehead added 153 yards and two touchdowns.  Robert Peterson passed for 311 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception for the Mustangs.  Fredrick Justice added 102 yards rushing.

MORAGA, CA —   Sam Houston had a strong first half and the Bearkats defeated the Gaels 28-14.  This game looked like it would be exciting after a 28-14 half time lead by the Bearkats, but both teams played excellent defense and neither offense was able to score in the second half.  George Scott passed for 164 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Bearkats.  Earl Day added 148 yards rushing and 1 touchdown.  Joe Gary passed for 189 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception for the Gaels.  Roy Barnett added 67 yards rushing.

SAN MARCOS, TX —   Robert Peterson completed 22 of 47 passes for 213 yards and zero touchdowns to lead Cal Poly to a 27-24 win over Texas State.  This game did not disappoint as it was never over until the final seconds ticked off of the score board.  The surprise of the game was second string Harold Alexander rushing for 103 yards and two touchdowns.  With 2:36 left in the 4th quarter Tommy Rios rushed up the middle for 75 yards for the Bobcats cutting the lead to 27-24.  The Bobcat defense couldn’t get the Mustang offense off of the field as they were able to run out the clock and secure the victory.

WILLIAMSBURG, VA —   Steven Curtis completed 26 of 37 passes for 259 yards and had three touchdowns to lead Texas State to a 44-34 win over William & Mary.  William & Mary scored the first 10 points, including a 78 yard punt return by Donald Beck.  After a 100 yard kickoff return by James Cooper pulled Texas State to within 10-7, William & Mary kicked a field goal to extend their lead to 13-7.   Texas State then scored 10 straight points to go up 17-13.  With the score tied at 34-34 with 5:56 left in the fourth quarter Texas State would score the final 10 points to seal the win.  Paul Leonard pass for 143 yard and 2 interceptions for the Tribe.

SAN DIEGO, CA —   Donald Robinson threw 2 touchdowns and Northern Arizona got the win 30-10 over #19 San Diego.  Marvin Whitehead rushed for 144 yards on 29 carries.   Donald Robinson threw a 18 yard pass to Gary Bryant and Charles Jones returned a kickoff 93 yards to give the Lumberjacks a 17-7 halftime lead.  The Toreros just couldn’t get it going in the second half as they only manged to kick a field goal with 8:53 left in the game.  Kenneth Tomlinson passed for 76 yards with 0 touchdowns for San Diego.

HUNTSVILLE, TX —   Daniel Cook rushed for 123 yards and George Scott threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns as Sam Houston State defeated Wofford 42-30.  The Terriers pulled within five on a 53 yard pass from Joseph Brown to Michale Bruce with 7:21 left in the fourth quarter.  The Bearkats were able to put together a drive of their own and score a touchdown with 3:12 left in the game.  The Bearkat defense then stood strong as they were able to get a turn over on downs and the offense then ran out the clock.  Paul Baldwin passed for 199 yards and one touchdown for the Terriers.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA —   Robert Peterson threw for 294 yards and one touchdown as Cal Poly defeated Southeast Missouri 34-31.  This was a back and forth game and both teams knew that it would come down to which defense could get a critical stop.  With 1:21 left in the fourth quarter Phillip Johnston kicked a 23 yard field goal to give the Mustangs a 34-31 lead.  The Redhawks received the ball on their 30 yard line and moved the ball quickly getting down to the Mustang 24 yard line.  With 4 seconds left on the clock, the Redhawks called their last time out.  Southeast Missouri brings out the kicker, only to watch as Daniel Huff misses the 41 yarder giving the victory to Cal Poly.  Charles Green passed for 335 yards and one touchdown for the Redhawks.

ITTA BENA, MS —   Northern Arizona had another classic game but was on the wrong side losing 17-7 to Mississippi Valley State.  It was all Northern Arizona in the first half as the Lumberjack led 7-0 at the half.  The Delta Devils made some half time adjustments as they would score the last 17 points in the second half.  Donald Robinson passed for 157 yards for the Lumberjacks.  Marvin Whitehead added 149 yards rushing and one touchdown.  Thomas McLaughlin passed for 191 yards for the Delta Devils.  William Hopkins added 68 yards rushing and one touchdown.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO —   This game was a nail bitter as Southeast Missouri was able to upset #4 Northern Arizona 17-13.  With 30 seconds left in game on third down and the ball on Northern Arizona’s 28 yard line John Woodward sacked Donald Robinson for a loss of 5 yards.  Now with 13 seconds left and still trailing 17-13, Donald Robinson takes the snap and ends up throwing the ball away.  I am sure that Coach Mraston will be talking to him and telling him to at least give his receivers a shot to make a play.  Donald Robinson would finish with 152 yards passing and one touchdown for the Lumberjacks and Marvin Whitehead would add 158 yards rushing.  Charles Green passed for 179 yards and one touchdown for the Redhawks.

COOKEVILLE, TN —   Tennessee Tech showed why the OVC is the conference to beat as they overwhelmed Cal Poly and won by a score of 48-21.  Tennessee Tech started off strong as they scored the first two touchdowns.  Cal Poly would score it the second quarter to make it look like we had a game but the Golden Eagles would score two more touchdowns to close out the half leading 28-7.  Cal Poly started off the second half with a bang as Randall Richardson ran back the kickoff for a 95 yard touchdown.  Tennessee Tech would then score 20 straight points effectively putting this game out of reach.   Robert Peterson passed for 191 yards, one touchdown, and one interception for the Mustangs.  Daniel Stokes threw for 476 yards and 4 touchdowns for the Golden Eagles.

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ — For the second straight week the Sam Houston State offense started off slow but was able to turn it around in the second half.  George Scott threw for 230 yards and a touchdown to lead Sam Houston State to a 20-10 win over Monmouth.  Timothy Latham kicked a 25 yard field goal in the 4th quarter to finally give Sam Houston State the first lead of the game 13-10.  Daniel Jefferson was 22-of-37 passing for Monmouth for 226 yards, a touchdown, and 0 interceptions.

CONWAY, SC — Theodore Thompson threw for 455 yards and three touchdowns and Coastal Carolina beat Cal Poly 40-21.  Zachary Wade finished with 193 yards receiving for the Chanticleers and Mitchell Mullins added 124 receiving yards and a touchdown.  After Coastal Carolina scored the first 17 points Cal Poly scored a touchdown of their own when Fredrick Douglas scored on a 5 yard carry.  Cal Poly was able to bring the score to 20-14 at the half.  Theodore Thompson completed a 17 yard pass to Michael Wilson to make it 33-14 essentially putting the game out of reach.  Robert Peterson passed for 201 yards with 0 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions for the Mustangs.  Fredrick Justice also added 116 yards rushing and one touchdown for Cal Poly.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA — Fredrick Justice ran for 194 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and Robert Peterson passed for 285 yards and 4 touchdowns in Cal Poly’s 65-7 opening victory over FCS opponent Fordham.  After leading 34-0 at halftime, Cal Poly left no doubt that this game wasn’t going to be close.  The Rams passed for 183 yards and ran for 71.  Cal Poly held Fordham quarterbacks to 183 yards of passing on only 13 completions.  John Jackson also threw an interception.

SAN MARCOS, TX — Thomas McLaughlin passed for 531 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead Mississippi Valley State past Texas State 52-45.  Texas State started off strong scoring the first 13 points.  In the second quarter Mississippi Valley State got on the board with a touchdown pass from Thomas McLaughlin to Carl Shelton.  Mississippi Valley State got the lead in the third quarter when William Hopkins rushed up the middle to put them up 28-27.  Texas State would not be down for long as they quickly scored a touchdown of their own when Steven Curtis hit William Porter for 9 yards to put them up 34-28.  Mississippi Valley State would then score the next 17 points to put Texas State trailing 45-34.  With 5:32 left in the fourth quarter Tommy Rios rushed up the middle for 56 yards and Steven Curtis completed a pass to Bobby Walton for the 2 point conversion to tie it up 45-45.  Mississippi Vally State would then score a touchdown with 1:10 left in the fourth to go up 52-45.  On 4th and 4 with 45 seconds left Texas State quarterback Curtis throws the ball away effectually ending the rally.

HUNTSVILLE, TX — George Scott threw for 188 yards and a touchdown and Sam Houston State defeated Richmond 18-10.  The Bearkats jumped out to a 11-10 lead in the second half as George Scott completed a touchdown pass of 19 yards to Daniel Cook.  Richmond was unable to cut into the lead as the Bearkats defense was able to keep them off the board in the second half.  Sam Houston State was able to score one more touchdown late in the fourth to put them up 18-10.  Albert Morris finished with 63 receiving yards.  Wayne Davis was 16 of 31 with 142 yards, 0 touchdowns and an interception for the Spiders.
